1943年4月6日、レイナルヒチコック社からまず英語版 The Little Prince が発売され、少し遅れて（4月中に）フランス語版 Le Petit Prince が発売されました。【「星の王子さま」出版史】
その英語初版本のうちから、番号が手書きされ、サンテックスが肉筆でサインをしたフロントページが追加されたものが525冊作られました。25冊は著者や出版社用に取り分けられ、残り500冊が著者サイン本として市販されました*。

* レイナルヒチコック社の出版物は、初版本の内 200〜500 冊を著者サイン本として特別販売することが多かったようです。サンテックスの著作はすべてそうして発売されました。

一般市販品と唯一異なるのは、サンテックスのサインがなされたフロントトップページのこの１枚です。正規のフロントトップの更に前に、もう一枚フロントページがあるのです。【既存の製本済みの本（＝カット端が合わない）に、別印刷の紙（紙質は同一）を貼り込んであります。】 最後の行がサンテックスのサイン。その１行前に番号が手書きで書き込まれており、この本は477と487です。

それぞれに、元の持ち主が書込みを入れています。左の本（#477）では生まれたばかりの子供への贈呈が示され、表紙裏および裏表紙裏の落書きから、幼い子供に与えられていた時期があったことが窺われます。かなり傷んでいるのはそのためでしょう。
【#477 の本についてきた来歴書によれば、ある婦人がサンテックス本人から贈られたとのことです。それが本当ならば、500冊すべてが完全に市販された訳ではないということになります。】
意地と行きがかりで、３冊目が手に入ってしまいました。順位４番目で手に入れ損なったあの #279 が転売されて市場に現れたのです。
最近になって作られた、真新しい函に入っています。ダークレッドのクロス装に濃い臙脂色の背革を組み合わせた、落ち着いた中にも華やかなデザイン。思い切った色使いですが、下品に堕ちてはいません。控え目な金の背文字（The Little Prince Saint-Exupéry Signed Limited Edition 1943）もシンプルで、函のデザインを引き立たせます。
寸分の隙もなくピッタリと納まります。腕の良い職人か、ホビーで装丁や函作りを続けてきた手練れの技か。いづれにせよ作者はただ者ではありません。デザインと相俟って、素晴らしい仕上がりです。
本そのものも、今まで私が見た初版本の中では一番綺麗で、傷や書込みもなく、「ミント」と呼んでもよいくらいの状態ですが、カバーは失われています。
サインが少しまのびしています。紙質・印刷文字・手書き番号の文字やインク等は紛れもなく他と同じですから、本物と思ってよいでしょう。
随分のお金を掛けてこの素敵な函を作った持ち主は、The Little Prince を心から愛していたのだと思われます。それなのに手放したのはなぜなのでしょう。不測の不幸が襲ったのか、あるいは、一緒にいられる時間が残り少ないことを悟って、愛する王子さまに別れと門出の衣装を誂えたのでしょうか。

「かごしま近代文学館が、この本を手に入れていた」と報じている新聞記事についてこの欄でお知らせしましたが、“525冊の限定版のひとつ”ではなかったことが判明しました。 同館に直接お尋ねした結果、署名扉はなく、通常のタイトルページに署名と献辞が書かれているとのことですから、一般市販の The Little Prince にサンテックスが書込みを入れたもののようです。
誤報でしたので囲み欄は削除しました。かなり初歩的な鑑定ミスですが、新聞社やかごしま近代文学館に責任はありません。鑑定したのは某ミュージアムです。 （2001.05.） |
